Ministry to the Dying has been known by several names. Many refer to this ministry as the "Last Rites" while others may remember it as "Extreme Unction."
Today this ministry is know as Anointing of the Sick with Viaticum. Viaticum means "provision (i.e. food) for the journey" and is meant to the be final time a loved one receives the Eucharist prior to making the journey from earthly life to eternal life. This ministry also offers an opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation one last time.
One huge misunderstanding still exists concerning this Sacrament, which is that our loved ones need to be at death's door in order to receive the Sacrament. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Actually, it is preferable (and better for our loves ones) to receive this Sacrament while they are still able to speak and receive the Eucharist.
When a loved one is preparing for this journey, but before it becomes an emergency, please contact the Parish Office to schedule a visit from the Priest. Waiting until the last minute may jeapordize the ability of the Priest to available to come.
Contact the Parish Office at 410-255-3677 to schedule a visit.
