Rev. Deacon Donald P. Latrick |
Originating from the
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania area, Don graduated high school from St.
Basil's Preparatory School in Stamford, Connecticut. He then attended King's
College in Wilkes-Barre, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and subsequently
completed his undergraduate studies in Washington, D.C. where he earned a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from The American University.
Residing in the Orchard Beach area, Don is the very proud father of
three children: a daughter who is completing research work on her Ph.D. in
bio-chemistry; a son who is a Second Year Law Student; and a daughter who is a
college senior majoring in English and Theatre.
Don had a lengthy career with the Department of Defense where he was employed in a
variety of positions that ranged from research analyst, to senior budget officer,
and executive manager. During that time, he also earned a Master of Science
Degree in Education from the University of Southern California and a
Master of Arts Degree in Management & Supervision from Central
Michigan University.
As preparation for his diaconal ministry, Don enrolled in theological studies at St.
Mary's Seminary & University in Baltimore where he earned a Master of
Arts Degree in Theology in 1990.
Being a member of the Eastern
Catholic Church from birth, Don was ordained a deacon on November 18,
1990, by Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan-Archbishop Stephen Sulyk in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the request of His Eminence,
William Cardinal Keeler, Deacon Don was granted diaconal faculties for the Latin
Church in
November 1992 from which time he had been ministering at Our Lady of the Chesapeake by
conducting our baptism preparation program, celebrating the Sacrament of
Baptism, and assisting with funerals and wake services.
In January 2001, Deacon
Don began serving our parish community as Pastoral Associate for which,
in addition to his diaconal ministry, he is responsible for presenting
Adult Faith Formation programs,
providing spiritual counseling, coordinating the parish's Children and Youth Protection Program (STAND),
assisting in planning and developing various events at The Gathering
Place, and maintaining the parish web site.
Deacon Don also finds time to teach at Anne Arundel Community College
where he is Adjunct Faculty in the Criminal Justice and Political Science Departments. He additionally is
a theology instructor for the Archdiocese of Baltimore's Church Leadership
Institute.
For recreation and relaxation, Deacon Don
enjoys reading, working out at the gym, yoga, ballroom and swing dancing,
playing golf and, in the winter, reading about playing
golf. Always mindful of the value of a dollar, he makes sure that he
gets his money's worth out of a round of golf by hitting the ball as many
times as possible. He finds playing golf to be a spiritually
uplifting experience that provides ample opportunity for prayer and
theological reflection--especially on the long par-3's and when standing
over a four-foot putt. Deacon Don's feelings about golf can best be
summarized by the inscription on his coffee mug which reads: "God
sends no stress that Golfing and Prayer can't handle."
